Waikura Joint Stations has a small herd of about 30 horses and breeds 3-5 foals each year. To define the breed is quite difficult due to the fact that over the time these Typical EAST COAST HORSE has evolved out of the need to develop a type of horse which meets the requirements for a stationhorse used to difficult and rough terrain.
The herd has a quite a colourful appearance and is kept semi-wild.
Each year in January, the famous HORSE SPORTS event is organized at Potaka. Occasionally it takes place at Waikura Station.
This unique event is a highlight for participants from all over the East Coast and the spectators as well.
Its authentic atmosphere, involving a wide range of competitions with a lot of kids participating creates the feeling of a big family reunion.
